Decide what must survive from the hum
A hummed idea contains several different kinds of information: the direction of the melody, the rhythm, the length of notes, the pauses, and the sound of your voice. An AI music tool may preserve some of these while changing others. Decide which properties define the idea before judging whether a generated song is successful.
This guide develops an original motif rather than identifying an existing recording. Search tools that recognize a song from humming solve a different problem. If you are trying to discover the name of something you heard, use a song-identification workflow. Record two clean versions of the same idea
Capture the motif in a quiet place with a steady distance from the microphone. Hum the phrase, leave a pause, and repeat it. Avoid accompanying yourself with loud tapping that might obscure note starts. If you need a click to stay in time, keep it separate from the reference recording when the workflow allows.
Make one natural take and one slightly slower take. The slower version can help you identify uncertain notes or a rhythm that changes between repetitions. Describe the features you will compare after generation. For this example, the second note rises slightly, the third is the highest and held, and the fourth returns downward. If exact pitches matter, transcribe the motif into an editable note sequence or work with someone who can. A contour description is useful for review, but it does not encode the same information as actual notes and timing. Keep the distinction visible when handing the project to another musician.
Choose a tool with the right kind of input
Audio-reference generation, audio-to-note transcription, and text-to-music generation are different capabilities. Check what the selected mode actually accepts and what it lets you edit afterward. Begin with a sparse arrangement. For our motif, a simple bass foundation and a restrained chordal instrument make the melody easier to hear than a dense full-band production. Approve the musical relationship before requesting a dramatic chorus, new lyrics, multiple instrumental solos, and a different singer.
Give each iteration one job. One take can explore a warmer harmony. Another can change the groove while keeping the melodic phrase. A third can test a quieter opening. If every take changes tempo, key, instrumentation, structure, and melody together, choosing a favorite does not tell you what preserved or improved the original idea.
Keep any external service’s reference-specific instructions in that service. A request such as “keep the melody from my upload” is meaningful only when the file is actually attached to a supported generation mode. Pasting it into an unrelated text field cannot create that reference.

If possible, isolate the melody or listen to a sparse version. When the hook disappears under a busy accompaniment, determine whether it is still present but masked, or whether it was replaced. The first calls for arrangement or mix changes; the second calls for a different generation, transcription, or manual note edit.
Voice identity is a separate review. Keeping the same notes does not mean the result uses your voice, and a similar vocal tone does not prove the tune survived. Use only recordings and voices you are authorized to work with, and check the selected service’s current terms for the intended use.
Preserve the accepted idea through the handoff
Save the original recording, trimmed reference, identity card, accepted arrangement, and any editable notes. Mark which files preserve the motif and which are exploratory alternatives. A folder full of unlabeled “final” songs makes it surprisingly easy to lose the reason the project began.
The successful outcome is a musical decision you can explain: the high note still lands where intended, the pause remains, and the accompaniment supports the phrase.
