ElevenLabs voice cloning starts on different plans depending on the kind of clone you need. Instant Voice Cloning and Professional Voice Cloning are separate features, and a large credit balance does not automatically unlock both.

Quick answer: As checked October 23, 2026, Instant Voice Cloning starts on Starter; Professional Voice Cloning starts on Creator. Free does not include voice cloning. Choose the feature first, then budget the characters and retries your scripts require.

Higher tiers and enterprise arrangements exist, but the table focuses on the access decisions a solo creator is most likely to encounter.

A plan name answers only part of the question. Check the actual cloning method, any voice-slot limits relevant to your account, the intended use and the available credit balance before upgrading. Do not confuse a seat for a teammate with a slot for a cloned voice.

The billing documentation distinguishes feature access from usage. Buying more usage does not necessarily unlock a feature absent from your tier. If Professional cloning is the requirement, solve that access question before calculating whether a smaller allowance could cover the script.

Instant and Professional solve different preparation jobs

The official Instant Voice Cloning guide recommends a clean, consistent one-to-two-minute recording. A short file is convenient, but the microphone, room, speaker consistency and delivery still shape the reference. Upload duration and usable speech are not the same measurement.

The Professional Voice Cloning guide requires cloning your own voice and completing voice verification. It calls for much more clean material, with longer, consistent recordings recommended for quality. Follow its current preparation instructions rather than turning an upload minimum into a quality promise.

Professional access is not a shortcut around the preparation work. If your recording is noisy or changes microphone position midway, more minutes can preserve more inconsistency. Decide whether you can produce a stable reference set before selecting the method.

Use the provider's own authorization and verification process. Permission to use a recording and eligibility for a particular cloning workflow are related but distinct checks. Do not assume a general consent statement overrides the Professional workflow's own-voice requirement.

Calculate credits before comparing monthly plans

For the V2 Multilingual example documented on the pricing page, one generated character consumes one credit. Some Flash/Turbo API usage has a different rate. Enter the factor that applies to your chosen model and account; do not assume that a rate from one model applies to every model or interface.

The calculator estimates a repeated full-script workflow. It multiplies script characters by charged full-script attempts and the credit factor, then adds credits reserved for other work. It compares that total with the listed base allowance and separately checks cloning access. It does not connect to your account or quote an upgrade price.

Example: 8,000 characters × 3 attempts × 1 credit = 24,000 credits. Starter has 6,000 credits remaining from its base allowance and includes Instant cloning.

Planning estimate using October 23, 2026 base allowances. Excludes rollover, top-ups, discounts, account-specific usage, taxes and other charges. Reserved credits are your assumption, not a live account balance. Round up fractional credits conservatively.

Three cases where the answer changes

An occasional narrator using Instant cloning

An 8,000-character script with three full attempts at one credit per character needs 24,000 credits. Against Starter's 30,000 base allowance, that leaves 6,000. This only fits if the other work drawing on the account stays within that remainder. It does not predict whether three attempts will produce an acceptable narration.

The same script using Professional cloning

The arithmetic is still 24,000 credits, but Starter does not meet the feature requirement. Creator is the first listed tier with Professional access. This is the clearest example of why the feature gate and the usage calculation must remain separate.

A longer revision cycle

A 9,000-character script with four full attempts needs 36,000 credits at the same factor. That exceeds Starter's base allowance by 6,000 before any other work. Compare your account's actual additional-usage options and expected future workload; the calculator is not claiming that an upgrade is always cheaper than another permitted billing option.

The worked-example CSV includes all three cases with separate access and allowance outcomes. Replace the assumptions with your production history after a small test. Preserve the original estimate so you can see whether revisions were more expensive than expected.

Keep characters, minutes and finished files separate

A minute estimate depends on speaking pace, pauses and the script. Two narrators can deliver the same characters in different durations. A “minutes included” headline therefore should not replace the actual billing unit for the model you use.

Retries also need a precise definition. If you regenerate only one sentence, enter its characters in a separate worksheet row instead of counting a whole additional script. If you generate the complete script again, count the whole attempt. Assume retries are charged unless your account's documented behavior explicitly says otherwise.

Count final corrected text, including the punctuation and spacing that affect delivery. Keep the same approved script while comparing recordings. If you change words, punctuation, source audio and model settings at once, it becomes difficult to know why the sound changed or whether a higher-cost route helped.

Use a short test passage containing the names, numbers and transitions that matter to your work. Listen for pronunciation, speaker resemblance, breaths and stability before generating the full project. A polished ten-second demo does not establish how a longer narration will behave.

Prepare a clean source and a real acceptance check

Start by reviewing your recording with the free voice-clone sample checklist. It helps you think through duration, noise, clipping and consistency; it is not ElevenLabs verification and does not create a clone.

For a separate QuestStudio production workflow, open Voice Lab and inspect the models and controls currently available there. An ElevenLabs subscription does not transfer its credits or feature access into QuestStudio. Keep each provider's budget and output record separate.

Once you have a usable sample, define what an accepted result means: correct names, natural pacing, no unexplained voice changes and a clean export at the required format. Save the approved script, reference version, generation settings and accepted file together. Our voice-cloning tool comparison is useful if the broader provider choice is still open; it does not replace the current plan check here.

Revisit the plan after enough work to see a pattern. One difficult script is not a reliable monthly average. Track charged characters, partial repairs and accepted outputs separately so the decision reflects the work you actually finish.

Frequently asked questions

Which ElevenLabs plan includes Instant Voice Cloning?

Starter is the first listed plan with Instant Voice Cloning in the official pricing checked October 23, 2026. Verify the current plan page before subscribing.

Which plan includes Professional Voice Cloning?

Creator is the first listed tier with Professional Voice Cloning. The feature also requires the provider's own-voice verification and preparation process.

Can I clone a voice on the Free plan?

The current official billing and pricing documentation does not include voice cloning on Free. Free text-to-speech credits are not the same as cloning access.

Does a larger credit balance unlock Professional cloning?

Not by itself. Feature eligibility and usage balance are separate. Check the plan's cloning method and then calculate the credits needed for the work.

Does the calculator know my actual bill?

No. It uses your assumptions and dated base allowances. It does not read your account, include rollover or top-ups, or calculate taxes and account-specific charges.
