1. Create a configuration

3. Receive the selected route
The router evaluates eligible models, selects one, and reports which model it chose and why. If the hard constraints rule out every model, Runway says the API returns an explicit error instead of silently ignoring the configuration.

Prioritize quality, allow a longer response time, and restrict the list to models your team has approved for final output. This route fits hero media, client deliverables, and shots that will survive several rounds of review.
Cost-controlled batches
Prioritize cost and enforce a price cap. Use the route for thumbnails, large variation sets, moderation-safe placeholders, or the early passes that help a team decide which ideas deserve a higher-quality render.
A better production pattern
Use separate configuration IDs for preview, final, and batch workflows. One universal configuration is easier to set up, but it hides the real tradeoffs between those jobs.
Why Dry Runs Matter
Runway includes a dry-run option that validates model selection without generating media or charging for a generation. That makes it useful before a configuration reaches production.
- Confirm that at least one model survives all hard constraints.
- See which model is likely to handle a request and why.
- Catch an overly strict provider list or price cap before a user sees an error.
- Record routing decisions when comparing configuration changes.
A dry run proves that routing works. It does not prove that the generated media will meet your creative standard. Follow routing tests with a representative prompt suite and human review.

Maintain a small set of “golden” prompts that represent your real workload. Re-run them when a route changes, when a model is added, or when cost and quality suddenly move in an unexpected direction.
