Choose the split that solves the problem

Before extracting anything, name the mix change you need. Lowering a vocal under narration may require a vocal-and-backing split. Replacing a bass part needs access to the bass. An exploratory remix may justify several instrument groups. Asking for every available part can add expense and review work without improving the finished song.

Auto can return up to twelve stems; a targeted split isolates a chosen component and its complement. Check the current mode and credit quote before extracting. Stems are useful subdivisions of audio, but extracted stems are not the original multitrack recording session. Separation estimates components from a finished mixture. A voice can remain faintly in an instrumental part, while part of a guitar attack can appear in another output. The practical question is whether the separation supports your intended edit.

Keep extraction and export format separate

A WAV download may still be one stereo mix. Choosing WAV does not create separate instruments, and converting a compressed file to WAV cannot restore information already lost. Extract the needed parts first, then select an appropriate export format and range.

Suno's Studio export guide distinguishes a full-song export, a selected time range, and multitrack output. Record which one you use. If you export only a chorus, every part in that handoff should refer to the same chorus boundaries. A folder containing full-length drums and a trimmed vocal is an alignment problem waiting to happen.

Keep the original mix beside the extracted files. Use names such as songA-source, songA-vocals, and songA-drums, followed by a version identifier. Preserve the downloaded originals before making edits. If the stems are later trimmed or processed, save those as new versions.

For a handoff to another editor, include the source duration, export range, sample rate, and whether any silence was removed. “All files begin at the same origin” is useful only when it is true. Do not remove an apparently empty beginning from one stem just to make its waveform look tidier.

Import every part at the same origin

Use a new audio or video editing session and place the source mix and all stems at the same start position. Keep the source muted while listening to the stems together; otherwise you will hear the mix twice. Avoid automatic tempo warping or independent silence trimming until you have checked the raw alignment.

For this original exercise, imagine a 24-second cue with a clear drum entrance near eight seconds and an ending cymbal tail. The files and timings are illustrative. Use your actual source length and a visible, audible landmark in the worksheet.

  1. Beginning: confirm that all tracks share the same timeline origin, including any initial silence.
  2. Middle landmark: compare the drum entrance in the source and the extracted parts.
  3. Ending: check that the final phrase and decay have not been trimmed differently.
  4. Full playback: listen from start to finish for drift, gaps, or doubled events.

A constant offset suggests a placement or trim issue. A difference that grows over time calls for checking tempo processing, stretch settings, and how the editor interpreted the files. Do not move clips repeatedly by ear before inspecting those settings; you may fix one moment while making the ending worse.

Different sample rates are not automatically a fault because editors can resample correctly. The important check is whether the imported audio retains the intended timing and pitch. If something plays faster or lower, investigate the import interpretation instead of assuming the model generated a different performance.

Listen for the artifact that matters to your edit

First listen to the stems together at roughly the same level as the source. Then solo the part you intend to change. A separated vocal may sound odd alone but work adequately in the intended mix. Conversely, a faint vocal remnant in the backing can become obvious once you remove the main vocal completely.

Do not require the summed stems to cancel perfectly against the source as the sole acceptance test. These are estimated components, and the extraction process may alter detail. A difference signal can help locate changes, but it does not tell you by itself whether the intended remix is usable.

Write down the failure in terms of the job: “the original lead vocal remains audible during the presenter” is more useful than “separation quality is 7/10.” That description tells you whether a different split, another source, or a smaller mix change is worth trying.

Make the smallest useful mix change first

Suppose the goal is a music bed beneath a spoken introduction. Lower the vocal stem and audition it with the actual narration before adding equalization, compression, and new instruments. If the backing already carries recognizable words, that may be the limiting factor. More processing on the main vocal will not remove words embedded elsewhere.

If the adjustment works, check the transition back to the full song. An abrupt vocal-level jump can be distracting even when each section sounds good separately. Use an intentional transition in the editor and listen to the exported sequence, including the first and last seconds.

For a replacement bass or drum part, compare the new performance against the remaining original transients. A perfectly timed new drum can still sound doubled if the old attack survives in another stem. Decide whether a quieter replacement, a different extraction, or keeping the original rhythm serves the project better.

Keep an unprocessed stem folder. If an effect makes the artifacts more obvious, return to those files instead of repeatedly processing an already damaged export. The source, raw stems, working session, and final mix should remain distinguishable.

Treat MIDI as another representation

Suno's Studio documentation also describes MIDI export for supported workflows. MIDI represents musical events rather than the original audio recording. Importing it with a different instrument will not reproduce the generated singer, room sound, or exact timbre. Use it when you want editable musical information, then audition the new instrument as a fresh arrangement decision.

Keep the audio reference beside the MIDI version. Check note lengths, timing, and musical intent before building a production around the transcription. A successful file download is only the beginning of that review.
